EAST GARRISON / MARINA AREA, Monterey County — October 27, 2026. A new library in the unincorporated East Garrison community near Marina is moving from plans toward construction. Monterey County Free Libraries announced a September 19, 2026 groundbreaking ceremony for the future 4,200-square-foot East Garrison Branch.
What is planned
The one-story building at 13993 Sherman Boulevard is designed for library services, a flexible community meeting room, outdoor areas, parking, EV charging and a Sheriff’s field office. A proposed community library is more than books: technology access, meeting space and nearby services can be valuable for a growing area previously without its own permanent branch.
How the project is financed
A separate county Board of Supervisors report described a competitive construction bid, identifying approximately $5.64 million as the apparent low responsible bid in summer 2026. Procurement materials also document a bid protest and staff review, showing why the bid figure should not be equated automatically with a final audited project cost. The county’s schedule at that point projected completion toward the end of 2027; dates can change.
Location note: East Garrison has a Marina mailing address but is an unincorporated Monterey County community, not part of Marina’s municipal government. The Monterey County library system leads the service proposal.
Official sources: Monterey County library groundbreaking announcement, East Garrison branch development page and county contracting report.
Editor’s note: A ceremony and expected 2027 completion do not prove the branch is already open.
